A post I’ve been meaning to write for a longggg time but better later than never! November marked my 26th birthday and to celebrate Adam decided to take me on a surprise train trip for the day. He managed to keep the surprise all the way up until we collected our tickets at Darlington train station where I found out we were heading to Liverpool for the day. Little did I know that was only the beginning of the surprises! He’d also booked us into the 1st Class carriage with Transpenne Express and had booked a restaurant reservation for later that afternoon. He put in so much thought and did so well at keeping the surprise as you’ll know from our proposal story that we have a little habit of spoiling surprises!
As this was all a surprise, I didn’t plan on blogging about it so I left my camera at home. However, the meal we had on the afternoon was literally one of (if not the BEST) meals I’ve ever had so I couldn’t not shout about it on here. Please bare in mind the lighting and my phone camera really don’t do the food justice but I really hope you go and give the restaurant a try because I honestly couldn’t fault it one bit!
The restaurant which is the hot topic on my lips at the moment is Salt House Bacaro, located in the financial district in Liverpool on Castle Street. Situated right on the corner, it’s easy walking distance from the centre of Liverpool. Our reservation was booked for 5pm, where we were greeted at the door and taken straight over to our table. The restaurant was low lit and decorated with fairy lights, giving a warm and intimate feel as soon as we settled into our seats. Considering our late afternoon reservation, it was still relatively busy but it didn’t affect the attentive service we received.
Since we were celebrating, we ordered a bottle of champagne and I also ordered the homemade limoncello and raspberry bellini as recommended by a lady who was sat on the table next to us which was a great recommendation. The champagne came in one of those bucket stands filled with ice which made us feel quite swish!
Salt House Bacaro is best known for its charcuterie and small plates, making it the perfect place for those who enjoy dipping their taste buds in a variety of different flavours in one sitting. Whilst we decided on the many dishes we were going to pick for our main course, we ordered a tomato garlic bread (£2.95) to share which was a small (around 5 inches) hand stretched pizza base with the most flavoursome tomato and garlic combination on top. This set the bar high for our main dishes, it was small but just enough to make us eager for more.
What’s great about Barcaro is they bring out your dishes as and when they are ready. No waiting around for your whole order to come out at once and get cold before you get chance to tuck into it. This gives you chance to chat between courses and really enjoy each dish without being overwhelmed with the choice available, making it a very socialable place to dine.
Whilst every dish was amazing in its own right, the dishes that I still think about almost 3 months on are the Braised ox cheek (£6.95) which was topped with mushrooms puree, truffle cheese, bone marrow jus – an adventurous dish for some but it was absolutely incredible. The Buttermilk chicken Milanese with macaroni and nduja cheese sauce (£7.95) was beautiful too.
After we’d finished our main dishes, we notice a table near us be served an interesting sharing dessert called Affogato (£6.95) which we decided to order too. This dessert was a trio of rich vanilla ice cream, a shot of Amaretto and an espresso shot, a classic Italian way to finish off your meal.
To this day I still think this is the best restaurant I’ve ever been to, due to the variety of full-flavour food dishes available along with the high quality ingredients used and the great service we received. Now to arrange another trip to Liverpool so we can go back and try the rest of the menu!
