As we countdown to the big man squeezing down our chimneys, festive events are happening left, right and centre. Last week I was invited along to The Talpore for breakfast for our office Christmas outing and to celebrate a family-friend’s birthday. It makes such a change going out for breakfast instead of an evening meal and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We all know how routines go out the window over the Christmas holidays and it’s nice to do things you wouldn’t normally do which is why I thought I’d share my experience of breakfast at The Talpore in case you’re wanting to try something a little different during the holidays in a gorgeous location.
The Talpore is located on site of the Tees Barrage in Stockton-On-Tees where they serve up a delicious buffet breakfast with everything you could want to get your day off to a flying start. As someone who is used to having just porridge and a coffee on a morning, I didn’t think I’d get my money’s worth but there’s so much choice that you’ve just got to fill your boots and make the most of it.
As we booked a table in advance and let them know we were celebrating a birthday and a works Christmas party, we were warmly welcomed to a beautifully set table complete with crackers and balloons which was a lovely surprise and a great personal touch to make our meal extra special.
As we arrived, chef Danny was topping up the hot buffet counter and made us aware that more poached eggs were on the way too. In comparison to other buffet breakfasts I’ve been to, The Talpore have much more variety available including a selection of eggs (scrambled, fried, poached, boiled or made into an omelette), fried toast and even bubble and squeak which was lovely! The bacon and sausages were well cooked too, just how I like them – other buffets that I’ve been to normally have barely-cooked meats which I prefer to be well done so this was a nice change.
Along with a hot breakfast, there was also a great range of cold breakfast options including fresh fruit, different cereals and an abundance of baked goods! After my cooked breakfast, I had some pancakes with some Nutella which were absolutely delicious. When buying the full breakfast (£9.50) you also have the choice of Costa drinks including lattes, hot chocolates and cappuccinos, as well as a make-your-own tea and coffee station.
Situated right next to the Tees Barrage, the picturesque setting makes for a great place for al fresco dining in the summer months too. With the white water course, the air trail and Teesside Park nearby, there’s plenty of activities for a fun-filled family day out. For those of you who are not local, there is a Premier Inn hotel attached to the restaurant too!
