After an 8 months stint of working away, Adam’s just got a new job back at home. To celebrate, I ordered a letterbox cake from bakerdays* as a little surprise for him coming home. If you read my post about Bloom and Wild a while back, you’ll know I love receiving things through the post and when I came across bakerdays on Twitter a few months ago I loved the idea of receiving something edible through the letterbox. Intrigued on how a cake could stay intact whilst in transit, I placed an order and waited patiently for it to arrive.
bakerdays have hundreds of cake designs available for all occasions which can be personalised to make the cake extra special. You even get a choice of sponges to choose from such as chocolate, lemon drizzle and traditional sponge. They also cater for special dietary requirements like gluten and dairy intolerances. I picked the rich chocolate chip sponge cake which was lovely and rich and topped with a thick royal icing. These cakes also have a great shelf life and can last up to two weeks. Even a week after delivery, our cake was still fresh and moist.
The packaging is neat, compact and secure so there is no need to worry about your cake getting damaged during delivery. Each letterbox cake comes in a baking tin which features small air holes so the cake can breathe, this could be reused for future bakes.
Although I absolutely love the idea behind bakerdays, I feel like a little more care could have been taken as there were a few things that let this service down a bit. The cake came a day earlier than I had asked, not necessarily a problem on this occasion but if you want to surprise somebody for their birthday or some other occasion that is date sensitive, it could spoil the surprise slightly. I also found that the cartoon image on the page came out a little blury so be aware of this when ordering. Also, the card to accompany the cake was a lovely touch but inside the sticker was placed upside down.
Despite my few issues, the concept of bakerdays is great and makes a perfect added gesture for a special occasion. Delivery was prompt, the packaging was spot on and the cake tasted really good too! It’s always nice to receive something exciting in the post for a change instead of the usual bills, takeaway menus and charity bags.
