If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you will know Norton holds a special place in my heart and belly. With tasty food joints and sophisticated cocktails bars cropping up along the high street, I find it hard to stay away. Some of my favourite places include 12 Harland Place and Canteen and Cocktails. A few weeks ago I finally got to try the new smokehouse pub in Norton that I’ve been itching to try since it opened its doors back in December. Serving up a variety of delicious, finger-licking platters to make your mouth water along with an impressive collection of craft, cask and world beers to wash it all down with, Head of Steam is a great pub for a casual catch up with the lads or lasses.
One week night a few weeks ago I popped along to Head of Steam with two of my friends for a catch up over some food. We decided to go for a BBQ meat board called the Sampler Board which featured a selection of all of their meats served alongside fries, slaw and pit beans. We thought this would be a great way to try of all of the meat they had to offer so we knew what we liked and didn’t like for our next visit. We ordered a side of fries (which was massive!) and shared the board between the three of us. It was a bit difficult to stretch the board between three people but the board would definitely feed two people without a problem. Alternatively if you’re a bigger eater, you might want to get one to yourself! All of the meat was delicious but my favourites were the hog butt (lol), badass brisket and the sausage. The ribs and wings were tasty however they were too messy for me; you end up spending most of your time trying to get the meat off the bone rather than eating it. I was really glad we ordered a side of the chips as they were lovely, covered in a generous helping of seasoning and crisped to perfection.
I was unaware that the Head of Steam had a dessert menu and much to my delight it’s the best one I’ve seen in a while! With a combination of pies, cheesecakes and a mouth-watering selection of handmade local ice creams, the dessert menu is perfect for die-hard fans of anything sweet and sickly. I opted for the double Oreo cookie brownie sandwich and it was one of the sweetest, most indulgent desserts I’ve ever eaten. Thanks to the Oreo pieces on top, the brownie was crunchy on the outside and stick-to-your-teeth gooey on the inside – exactly how I love it! My friends chose the waffles with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream and the cookie dough pie with Nutella ice cream which tasted as good as it sounds – that’s what I’ll be getting next time!
This week saw the launch of a monthly comedy night at the smokehouse where guests can watch some local comedic talent whilst they sit back and laugh whilst sipping 2 cocktails for £8. The comedy night is a free event so it’s perfect if you and your mates are strapped for cash but fancy a night out. I’ll definitely be bringing my friends along some time to try their exciting cocktail menu. For upcoming events and pictures to make you hungry, pop over to the Head of Steam Facebook page.
