As it was my birthday last weekend, it seemed necessary to celebrate at the Blacksmiths Arms – the home of steak on the stone. Located in North Yorkshire, this traditional country pub is situated in a lovely little village called Swainby. Whenever we have something to celebrate, whether it is a new job, a birthday or anniversary, this place is always on the top of my list of places to visit.

Upon arrival you’ll instantly feel the warm and welcoming atmosphere as you enter the family-run bar. Our reservation was for 8pm (I’d recommend booking ahead if you plan on visiting on an evening as it can get pretty busy) so whilst we waited for my brother and sister-in-law to arrive, we took a seat at the bar, ordered some drinks and had a peek at the menu. Once the full party had arrived and we had chosen what we’d like to eat, the waitress took our orders before taking us over to our table in the main room which was beautifully lit with black chandeliers and the addition of tealights, fairy lights and the glow from the open fire to creating a homely atmosphere.

Whilst we waiting for our main courses, we ordered some starters and I got potato skins with a BBQ dip. I loved how these were presented on a wooden slab with a cute mini pan to store the BBQ dip. I’d give 10/10 for presentation! You get a generous portion of deliciously crisp potato skins – exactly how I like ’em! You might find you have to wait a little longer for your food to arrive as everything is homemade and put together using fresh ingredients, so you can rest assured that you won’t be eating processed crap.

1939938_10155363805615355_8101686039244821716_nNow for the main event! The Blacksmiths Arms are famous for being the first restaurant in the UK to offer steak on the stone to their customers. On a previous occasion, me and Ross visited here and the chef who came to our table to cook our steak was telling us how he had quite a battle trying to get steak on the stone approved for the restaurant due to health and safety regulations. Basically, steak on the stone involves one of the chefs coming over to your table with a 380 degrees stone to cook your steak to your liking right in front of your very eyes. To me, the steak on the stone is a complete experience in itself, there’s nothing quite like it. It’s lovely to have a natter with the chef and it’s amazing to see how quickly the steak cooks! I would genuinely say it’s the best steak I’ve ever had (I usually get Sirloin well done). Although steak is available 7 days a week, the steak on the stone is only available on the Friday and Saturday evening.

My mam and dad brought a cake to the restaurant for them to bring out after we had finished our meal. Unfortunately, the cake fell apart in transit but the kitchen staff came to the rescue by trying to reassemble it and make it look presentable again with some fresh strawberries to garnish and I think they did a pretty good job! It just goes to show that they are prepared to go the extra mile with their service to ensure their customers are happy.
