Sometimes a little staycation is all you need to recharge your batteries and be grateful for the little things in life. 28th June marked the family business’ 25th anniversary which is a huge accomplishment, so to celebrate, my mam and dad booked a weekend away to the Lake District where Adam and I decided to go down and join them for a night. Whilst they stayed in the beautiful Burnside Hotel and Spa in Bowness-on-Windermere, Adam and I stayed on my mam and dad’s boat on the marina nearby (which was hot and sweaty to say the least!).
Although we didn’t stay in the same hotel as my parents, we did spend a lot of our time there which was really lovely. After watching England play one of their final games in the World Cup, we headed to The Burnside Hotel for a slap up meal. The newly refurbished hotel and spa is located right by the lake, up a small hill to give guests the most desirable views of Bowness.
Upon arrival we were taken through to the restaurant which was filled with natural light and absolutely gorgeous copper interior. We were seated by the window which gave us an excellent view of the well-kept hotel gardens, creating a great setting for conversation over a fancy dinner.
I’ll admit, when my mam said she’d booked us a table for a five course al a carte meal, I was apprehensive. Though I love food, I sometimes find ‘posh’ food overrated and usually leave feeling unsatisfied. However I’m so glad we kept our reservation because the food was out of this world!
First came a filled slate of canapés whilst we waited for our drinks and placed our orders for our main meal. The canapés were a mixture of mushrooms, cucumber, fish and caviar – I’ll admit I didn’t try any as they didn’t appeal to me but my mam, dad and Adam happily ate my share and cleared the slate.
Both my dad and Adam chose the trio of sausages and mash for their main courses and it was the winning main in my eyes! I loved the presentation of the sausages and the quality of meat was really good. For my main I ordered the pork loin wrapped in pancetta and served with sweet potato whilst my mam order a lamb dish.
The presentation of the dishes was superb and the real highlight for me. I love seeing the chefs get creative in the kitchen and the presentation of a dish 100% makes or breaks your overall experience of a restaurant.
Although there were a few desserts on the menu that sounded very interesting, I couldn’t resist ordering an absolute classic, sticky toffee pudding! It was absolutely delicious and considering we were eating al a carte, the dessert portion was very generous!
As we were graced with such a warm and beautiful day, we finished the evening by sitting outside on the patio which looked out onto the lake below us – it was the perfect end to a lovely evening!
