As an avid watcher of the hit American show, Man Vs Food, I was excited when I heard we were getting our very own Man Vs Food restaurant right here in Middlesbrough. Boasting food challenges like the ones from the famous TV show along with slightly smaller portions for the less daring, the meat-heavy menu isn’t designed for the faint-hearted.
A few weeks ago Adam and I finally got around to trying out the new Man Vs Food restaurant which opened to the public back in August. We arrived around 4pm for a late lunch/early tea since neither of us had eaten since breakfast. Due to the time was visited, it was quiet with only a handful of other customers so we got seated straight away. As we were both really hungry, Man Vs Food seemed like the perfect place to eat out.
Looking at the menu, the grill house has a very good variety of dishes to choose from, with most being meaty and a few veggie options thrown in too. Adam ordered the beef brisket with a peri-peri sauce and I got the pulled chicken with the house BBQ sauce. All main meals come with skinny fries plus a side of your choice as standard, you can then upgrade your fries and select from a premium side menu which is what Adam and I both did. We both stuck with skinny fries and I decided to upgrade to mozzarella sticks whilst Adam got mac and cheese.
Our food arrived promptly within 5-10 minutes of us ordering which was great because we were really hungry however it was also concerning as it made us wonder how they managed to cook our food so quickly. We both agreed that our meats were really tasty and fell apart with little effort, combined with our sauces they were lovely. The fries were very average and Adam enjoyed his Mac and Cheese. Unfortunately I was left feeling disappointed that my mozzarella sticks looked and tasted like frozen ones you can buy a bag of 20 of in Iceland.
Although I struggled to finish my meal, Adam managed to finish his with plenty of room left over for dessert. We decided to head across the road to De Melo where we got a slice of cake each to take home and a brownie to share as we walked back to the car.
Unfortunately for me, the Man Vs Food restaurant didn’t live up to my expectations, I expected overwhelming portions, freshly cooked food and a more lively atmosphere depsite which may be different during peak times. I don’t plan on going back any time soon.
