Before our trip to Edinburgh last month, I asked Twitter for recommendations on where to eat whilst we were there. Georgia of Mapped Out Blog suggested we visited a burger joint called Bread Meats Bread which is located on Lothian Road in Edinburgh. Adam and I are partial to a juicy burger and after much disappointment at Saucy Burger in Sunderland, we’ve been on the hunt for a good burger ever since so we decided to give it a try. Crowned Scotland’s best burger of 2016, it’s got to be good, right?
After we arrived at Edinburgh Waverly station we flagged down a taxi to take us to our hotel and drop off our bags. We then got in another taxi and headed straight to Bread Meats Bread for a late lunch/early tea. It took us around 20 minutes in a taxi from Leith Walk.
When we got there we were swiftly seated as the place was pretty quiet. The restaurant gives off an old American cafeteria vibe with grey brick tiling to the walls, blackboard wall features and old school chairs. Kitted out with wooden details and Hollywood-inspired light up signs, Bread Meats Bread is a cool place to stuff your face before exploring the city of Edinburgh.
I was impressed by the variety on the menu which offered a wide range of beef and chicken burgers as well ones suitable for veggies and vegans. I got the pastrami burger which was a juicy beef burger topped with swiss cheese, bbq sauce and layers of sliced pastrami which cost £8.50. Quite expensive for a burger when you’ve got to order your sides separately however you get a lot of burger for your money AND it’s in the city so I think the price is totally reasonable.
Adam chose the pepperoni burger which consisted of a beef burger topped with slices of pepperoni, smoky mozzarella, marinara sauce, jalapenos and shavings of parmesan all packed together inside a garlic brioche bun. Adam’s burger was a tower of greatness and was as difficult to eat as it looks!
To accompany our burgers, we got a side of skin on fries and bacon fries. Dusted with cayenne pepper and topped with spicy beef mayo and mega crispy bacon, the bacon fries were incredible! Despite being full, we couldn’t bare to waste any.
I’ve never known a restaurant to cram so many of the best toppings into a burger, at no extra cost either! Normally when you open the top of your burger you find an overwhelming amount of cheap toppings such as lettuce and tomato which take the taste away from the exciting toppings such as bacon and cheese which are usually rationed.
We had a great experience at Bread Meats Bread and I’ll definitely be going back. The service was great, we were served quickly and the portion sizes were extremely generous and completely worth the money.
Where’s your go-to place to grab a juicy burger?
